This Tranquil Estate in Santa Barbara’s Hope Ranch Can Be Yours for $13 Million

The American Riviera, otherwise known as Santa Barbara, is considered one of the country’s most picturesque areas and an idyllic place to live for its moderate climate, near-constant sunshine, and seaside locale. It comes as no surprise that for decades, many entertainment industry A-listers and the world’s wealthiest have picked up massive parcels of land to construct sprawling mansions and estates—often with Spanish Revival– and Mediterranean-inspired styles.

While Montecito might claim the spotlight as the home to celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres, Oprah Winfrey, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Hope Ranch—ten miles west of Montecito—has a singular charm of its own. Established by a group of investors in 1925, Hope Ranch today is an exclusive gated community perched on high bluffs above the dramatic coastline with views of the Santa Ynez Mountains.

The spacious fireside great room spills out to a stone terrace enveloped in greenery.

The leafy, sedate suburb is home to many near-century-old homes as well as newer homes, making it an eclectic neighborhood filled with various types of architecture. Recently, a perfectly preserved resort-like property popped up for sale on Hope Ranch’s Via Bendita. Listed for a smidge under $13 million, the Spanish-style estate, named Casa Colibrí (or House of the Hummingbird), was built in 1965. It has architectural undertones inspired by George Washington Smith, a prolific Santa Barbara architect credited with popularizing the Spanish Colonial Revival style in the U.S. in the early 20th century.

Beautifully preserved and restored to its original form, the home is an airy oasis filled with dark wood floors, vaulted wood-beamed ceilings, ornate Spanish tiling, traditional oak flooring, iron sconces, metalwork, and large arched windows. The 7,142-square-foot home has six bedrooms, six bathrooms, and one half bathroom spread across two levels. The property is listed with Dusty Baker and Sally Hanseth of Sotheby’s International Realty – Montecito Brokerage.

The home’s relaxed atmosphere is characterized by a sunny informal dining area off the kitchen.

The stately entrance, lined with dark Spanish tiling and topped with wood-beamed ceilings, sets a warm ambiance for the home. The home flows into the central living space, with a dramatic vaulted ceiling and tile-lined fireplace. French doors lead to the back courtyard and fill the space with natural light.

Nearby, the bright, modernly updated kitchen has an eat-in island, and a casual breakfast table with doors that open to a patio, and there’s a dedicated formal dining room nearby. The home has two equally as impressiveprimary bedroom options, one on the main floor, the other upstairs. The second-floor primary bedroom has striking vaulted ceilings and French doors that open to a partially covered stone-lined terrace with a built-in daybed and treetop views of the surrounding area. Nearly every bedroom on both floors has French doors that open to either a patio or a terrace, so you’re never too far from the outdoors.

The 3.25-acre estate is brimming with lush landscaping, mature trees, towering palms, and pristinely manicured lawns. The ecologically conscious landscaping also features numerous plants indigenous to California. You’ll want for nothing here, as there are a suite of luxuries that rival many local five-star hotels. The tranquil backyard has a curved saltwater pool and spa, spacious patio, a chicken coop, enclosed garden, a kids’ play structure, bocce court, horse stable, fenced-in pasture area, and a separate gazebo with views of the ocean. Down a winding stone path is the enclosed, lit tennis court with spectator seating, and there’s also a detached guest house nearby.
