The role of java developer took the top spot on a new list of the UK's 25 best jobs for 2022 from job and employment expert Glassdoor.

Java developers work on creating web apps to go to market and to fill existing customer orders. They usually work as part of a software development team and are responsible for designing, implementing and maintaining Java applications.

Java developers can expect to make a median base salary of £55,381($74,614) in 2022.

Enterprise architect, the person responsible for the entire infrastructure of a company's IT platform, came in at number two. It was also the highest paying job on the list with a median base salary of £73,898.

STEM (Science, tech, engineering, and mathematics) roles dominated the top 25, with 11 jobs from the sector making it onto the list including java developer, enterprise architect, data scientist, and front end engineer.

This reflects the importance of tech within business, particularly since the onset of the pandemic, with demand for STEM roles rising and salaries increasing.

STEM employees highlighted flexible work practices, good work-life balance and non-hierarchical management structures within the industry, according to Glassdoor. STEM companies also featured heavily in Glassdoor's 50 best places to work in the UK in 2022 list.

However, just one in four (24%) STEM roles are held by women, although this predicted to increase to 30% by 2030.

Product manager came in at number three on the list of the UK's 25 best jobs for 2022, followed by full stack engineer, data scientist, HR manager, and corporate recruiter.

Corporate recruiter was the role with the highest rate of job satisfaction, according to Glassdoor's research.

The most in-demand job in the UK for 2022 was software engineer with 3,599 active job openings, according to Glassdoor. This reflects higher demand for software engineers to help companies with the move to working from home and indicates the need for businesses across all industries to accelerate their adoption of technology in order to stay relevant in an increasingly digital world.

Hybrid work policies are also becoming more important to UK employees, as many workers shifted to working from home during the pandemic. All of the roles on the list offer high levels of remote working.

Job with the highest number of remote job openings on the list was UX designer — a technical role that is responsible for enhancing customer satisfaction by improving the usability, accessibility, and pleasure associated with products. UX designers create interactive programs that enhance customers' experiences of a brand by using various forms of digital and web media.

The top 25 list included more HR and recruitment roles than in 2021 including HR Manager, corporate recruiter, and HR business partner as firms explore the best ways to attract and retain talent and maintain better ways of working in post-pandemic work environments while job vacancies stand at an all-time high.

As UK inflation hit 5.4% in December, companies are doing all their can to protect profits by employing a range of key business support roles, Glassdoor found. The ranking of the 25 best jobs included product manager, operations manager, business development manager, and customer success manager.

“Glassdoor’s best jobs list is reflective of the wider workplace trends we are currently seeing in the UK," said Glassdoor economist Lauren Thomas.

"Employees want more hybrid working and a better work-life balance — areas which technology and STEM roles have historically excelled in. HR positions are also well represented on the list as the current tightness of the labour market has forced employers to rethink their investment in employee experience.”
