UK GAS-Prompt prices fall on strong wind power output
Aug 15 (Reuters) - British prompt gas prices fell on Thursday as strong power output from wind turbines reduced demand for electricity from gas-fired stations, while the system was balanced.
Day-ahead gas price fell by 0.95 pence to 26.60 pence per therm by 0806 GMT.
* Weekend gas price fell by 1.25 pence to 26.00 pence.
* "There is a lot of wind power and it looks similar for the rest of the week," a British gas trader said, explaining the price dip.
* Power generation from wind turbines is expected high, at 9.1 gigawatts (GW) on Thursday, rising to 10.6 GW on Friday, out of a total metered capacity of 12.1 GW.
* Strong wind power generation typically reduces demand for electricity produced in gas-fired power plants.
* "Added to the bearish weather, the system is balanced and LNG (liquefied natural gas) is expected to pick up soon," added a second trader.
* The British gas system was largely balanced, with demand seen at 126.5 million cubic metres (mcm) and supplies forecast at 128.1 mcm per day, National Grid data showed.
* Britain received an LNG cargo on Wednesday and expects one more on August 26.
* Prices fell despite a decline in flows from Norway, which were 12 mcm lower day on day, at 26 mcm, as supplies through the Langeled pipeline declined.
* The British September contract rose by 0.25 pence to 31.90 pence per therm.
* The Dutch month-ahead gas contract, a benchmark for LNG prices as well as European gas, was up by 0.09 euro to 11.27 euros per megawatt hour.
* Day-ahead gas price at the Dutch TTF hub rose by 0.15 euro to 9.80 euros per megawatt hour.
* The benchmark Dec-19 EU carbon contract fell 0.02 euro to 26.89 euros per tonne. (Reporting by Lefteris Karagiannopoulos in Oslo; Editing by Angus MacSwan)
