The lack of clarity around holidays abroad means UK travellers are booking overseas trips for December and 2022, new research has revealed.

Data from price comparison site TravelSupermarket shows that for the week of 13 to 20 June, a whopping 53% of bookings made by comparing package holiday prices and clicking through to book were for 2022. This compares to 12% of searches for 2020 holidays in the same week in 2019.

It showed that 13% of all bookings were for December this year (more than September, October and November 2021 combined), making it the most popular departure month to book a holiday for.

The research revealed that only 21% of bookings have been made for this June, July and August and 12% for September, October and November.

Looking at where travellers are heading for their future escapes, TravelSupermarket's data showed that Spain, Greece and the US are the three most popular countries.

Emma Coulthurst, from TravelSupermarket, says people are wanting to put something in the diary to look forward to: "You’d normally see the majority of searches at this time of year for now until the end of October. But, at the moment, only a quarter of bookings are for this period.

"The current travel restrictions and lack of clarity means that holidaymakers are looking further ahead to next year rather than this summer. They want to have a blowout when they go away, with entertainment centres, New York and Las Vegas, topping the list for bookings. People are wanting to treat themselves, when they can."

With this in mind, we've rounded up some of the best package holidays for December and 2022 from Good Housekeeping Holidays, from watching the Northern Lights in Norway with Carol Kirkwood to being one of the first to experience the Rocky Mountaineer train in America's Southwest.
