This Is Us spoilers for season 5 episode 5 'A Long Road Home' follow.

This Is Us has revealed a major part of a storyline relating to Randall Pearson and the truth about his birth family, specifically his mother.

Many viewers hoped that Randall (Sterling K Brown) would have a chance to learn more about his family roots – however, Randall was left devastated when he discovered that his real father William Hill (Ron Cephas Jones) had given him the wrong information about his late mother, Laurel.

Randall's father William always told him that his mother died from an overdose shortly after his birth, but in the latest episode of season five 'A Long Road Home', Randall received information about Laurel in an email that revealed she passed away in 2015 from breast cancer.

He received the heartbreaking email upon his return to the office, which read: "I believe I knew your mother, Laurel. We were close friends, I was by her side when she died in May of 2015."

Randall spent a lot of time processing the tragic news and couldn't stop thinking about the fact that his father William may have been lying to him for the whole time that they knew one another.

Unsure if he wanted to learn more about his mother's death as he didn't want to think that his father was lying to him, Randall was encouraged by his therapist to find out the truth as it could help Randall feel more rooted in his history.

Beth sat with Randall as he made the decision to call Hai, the person who emailed him the information. Hai reassured Randall and insisted that William told him what he understood to be the truth.

"From what I know of the story, I believe he was telling you what he thought was the truth," Hai said, before suggesting that he could show Randall and Beth the city of New Orleans.

Will this give Randall the closure he needs or will he have more questions?
