US Midwest power grid operator expects to meet winter demand

Oct 31 (Reuters) - The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) anticipates having sufficient resources to meet power demand under normal grid and generator outage conditions during the upcoming winter, barring any extreme weather events.

MISO, which oversees the grid for 45 million people in 15 Midwestern U.S. states and Manitoba in Canada, expects winter demand could exceed 106 gigawatts (GW) with 121 GW of supply available, while the all-time winter record for power demand was 109 GW on Jan. 6, 2017.

"We anticipate having enough resources to manage normal conditions but there is always the potential for an extreme weather event to strain the grid," said Jessica Lucas, MISO's executive director of system operations.
