A wine bar in Guildford has been decidedly upfront in its approach to hiring a new employee by listing the position in a far from enticing manner.

But the tongue-in-cheek advert, promising “mediocre” pay, “lousy” work conditions and “strictly no social life” has attracted far more attention than expected, according to a report in the Telegraph.

The bar’s owner, Darren Ayres, told the newspaper that he had been “quite taken aback” by the response so far.

He explained that he had decided to get creative with the bar’s adverts after it struggled to attract interest due to “increasingly fierce” competition for recruitment in the area over the last few years.

“It has meant that we have had to ramp up the message when putting out a job advert having had very little response from a previously more staid advert,” Ayres said.

“We ourselves have been caught off guard at the response that has been generated by the window advert both locally and further afield.”

He added: “It was clearly meant to be tongue-in-cheek, with a touch of honesty thrown in. And we are happy that it made people smile.

“Hopefully my new staff will not keep me to the job description, but you never know!”
