Need a winter date idea? Take a cooking class at Sur La Table online or in person

Our team is dedicated to finding and telling you more about the products and deals we love. If you love them too and decide to purchase through the links below, we may receive a commission. Pricing and availability are subject to change.

Unless you love to ski or have a fabulous collection of coats, outdoor winter dates are generally a no-go. So, inside it is! Of course, you can still go out for dinner and drinks, but that gets boring after a while. Instead, get to know each other with a more interactive and fun date idea: a cooking class.

Sur La Table offers in-person and virtual cooking classes. However, the cookware retailer also offers specific “Date Night” courses for two. You can learn to cook together in a low-pressure setting, plus walk away with a really good meal and a few new skills.

The Date Night classes are offered in-person in cities across the U.S. on select nights. They’re led by professional chef instructors and are generally two to two-and-a-half hours long. However, more specifically, the Date Night classes offer a more romantic theme, like cooking with wine, winter in Paris, New York steakhouse, sushi for two or surf ‘n’ turf.

The Cooking With Wine class definitely sounds like fun! According to the class description, you will “learn how to incorporate wine into a three-course romantic dinner. Try your hand at adding Chardonnay, Prosecco and port to scallops, risotto and even a chocolate cake.”

On Sur La Table’s website, choose which class you’d like to take (you can preview the menu beforehand). Then, choose your location and preferred date to see availability. Classes are usually capped at 16 students, so if you see one you want to take, book your spot ASAP. Prices may vary based on the class menu, date and time, but usually range from $79 to $89 per person.

If there aren’t any in-person classes near you, you can also plan a night in with a live online cooking class. Sur La Table’s online cooking classes start at just $29 per household, and you can cook with a date or a few friends. Prior to class, you’ll receive a prep packet with your grocery shopping list and instructions. The classes are 90 to 120 minutes long and are taught over Zoom, where you can ask your instructor questions as you have them.

Cooking can be fun, especially when you have good company to share your meal with. Plus, if it’s a second or third date, an activity could help you avoid any awkward silences.
