MADRID/LONDON (Reuters) -Spanish bank Sabadell has lined up advisers to assess its options after rival BBVA unveiled a 12 billion euro ($12.83 billion) takeover offer, sources said on Thursday, as shares in Sabadell extended gains on the proposed deal. BBVA said this week that it had approached its smaller rival with an all-share offer, nearly four years after previous talks on a merger between Spain's second and fourth-largest lenders collapsed. The deal would create a Spanish bank with assets of nearly 1 trillion euros and a market value rivalling Santander, as well as helping BBVA diversify away from emerging markets like Mexico.
MADRID (Reuters) -Spanish bank BBVA said on Wednesday it had submitted a merger proposal to Sabadell, valuing its smaller rival at about 12 billion euros ($12.8 billion). The possible merger would allow BBVA to diversify away from Mexico, its main market, and developing economies such as South America and Turkey, and focus on its domestic market as banks try to raise revenue by scaling up their business as a boost from high interest rates fades. The new lender would have more than 100 million customers globally, and aim to be the "largest bank by market capitalisation in the euro area", BBVA said in a statement.
Spanish lender BBVA and smaller rival Sabadell said on Tuesday that they had started negotiations to explore a possible merger, triggering a rise of more than 7% in Sabadell's shares. BBVA said it had conveyed to the chair of the board of directors of Banco Sabadell the interest of BBVA's board of directors "in initiating negotiations to explore a potential merger transaction between the two entities". Sabadell confirmed that it had received an indicative written proposal from BBVA for a merger on Tuesday afternoon.
