Market check: Stocks rise into the close, Russell 2000 among lagging indices

Yahoo Finance markets reporter Ines Ferre breaks down the choppy market action ahead of the closing bell, as well as sector gains and losses felt in the semiconductor and travel industries.

Video transcript

INES FERRE: Some choppy trading that went on today. Just take a look at our YFi Interactive screen. We're looking at the Dow right now that's up more than 100 points. But look at this action throughout the day. Also the NASDAQ composite is set to perhaps close flat. And the S&P 500 is flat right now. The Russell 2000 underperforming today among the indices, down almost 1 and 1/2% for the small caps.

Also, taking a look under the hood at the sector action, we are seeing that today, energy was lagging. And you had healthcare and consumer staples, communication services, and technology in the green. Taking a look also today at what was lagging, that was semis. These were under pressure after a BofA cautious note. Also, the travel stocks were under pressure today, with the cruiseliners down, with Carnival down 14% after a bearish call from Morgan Stanley.
