Memorial Grows Outside Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville

A memorial to Muhammad Ali grew in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday, June 4. People laid flowers and other mementos to Ali outside the Muhammad Ali Center, and there was an impromptu musical performance. Earlier in the day, the city lowered its flags to honor the former boxing heavyweight champion a day after his death in Arizona.

Ali died on Friday in a Phoenix area hospital after being admitted earlier in the week with respiratory problems. Ali was the heavyweight champion three times and won a gold medal in the 1960 Olympics before turning professional. In the 1960s, Ali shed his name, Cassius Clay, when he converted to Islam. He was an outspoken in the fight for civil rights and against the Vietnam War, for which he refused to serve in the military. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease more than 30 years ago.
