Under Armour debuts new sneaker-slide hybrid shoe, the ‘UA SlipSpeed’

Yahoo Finance Live checks out Under Armour's new sneaker-slide hybrid shoe.

Video transcript

DAVE BRIGGS: All right, focus on my feet now because my play is Under Armour. I'm not merely rocking red shoes because it's Valentine's Day. No, it's because the retailer, Under Armour, today opened a pop-up store on Fifth Ave in New York City centered around these babies. This is Under Armour's new $150 sneaker/slip. So what's the key here? The key is how the heel folds down. If you can see, the heel folds up, and then folds right back down, and it becomes a slide after you're done working out. Yeah, it is both a slide and a shoe.

Founder Kevin Plank saying at a launch party last night, we have not yet built our defining product, but this comes close. The sneakers also offer the BOA wheel tightening cable system that eliminates the need to tie laces. That appeals to the young kids. New CEO Stephanie Linnartz will start in less than two weeks after 25 years at Marriott. She'll have her hands full.

Shares are up 6% this year, down 37% over the last 12 months and really flat today. I got to tell you, I put them on initially and was bothered by folding the heel down. But I wore them all day and forgot it was there. And so now it has become a really convenient-- they're not aiming at 46-year-old dads. I think they're aiming at my teenage kids, who I think this will really appeal.

SEANA SMITH: That's what I was just going to say. I don't know if you're exactly the target demo.

DAVE BRIGGS: No.

SEANA SMITH: You were very-- I was next to you. You were very, very skeptical when you first put it on. I think it makes a lot of sense, especially if you are targeting those teenagers. You remember-- I remember when I was much younger, I would try to fit my foot into shoes all the time without having to reach down because I was simply lazy. So it makes a lot of sense. I think this could potentially be a hit for teens and for those in their early 20s. I don't know about that red color. I love it for Valentine's Day.

DAVE BRIGGS: Well, it's Valentine's Day, man.

SEANA SMITH: I know. I like that you're rocking the red there, but I don't know. It's certainly not the next it product.

DAVE BRIGGS: They've got white, yellow, black, and a pink version--

SEANA SMITH: I would try it. What about you?

DAVE BRIGGS: --as well.

ALLIE CANAL: I think teens, yes, I agree. One, if you're working out in that and then sliding it in, doesn't the shoe get smelly? I mean, I don't know.

SEANA SMITH: They're washable.

ALLIE CANAL: They're washable?

DAVE BRIGGS: They are machine washable.

ALLIE CANAL: OK, all right. You know, I could see--

DAVE BRIGGS: But yes, they do get smelly.

ALLIE CANAL: Yes, I was going to say, because I know my sneakers, I have very specific sneakers for each thing that I do. But I do think the teens will probably gravitate towards these.

DAVE BRIGGS: Very, very comfortable. All right, Allie, thank you for playing.
