US-Backed Forces Occupy Landmark Clock Tower in Raqqa

During fighting against Islamic State militants, US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces took control of a landmark clock tower in Raqqa, Syria, on Tuesday, August 22.

The clock tower, at the end of al-Qawatli Street in Raqqa, can be seen in this video shot by Kurdish media. The fighter seen in the video identifies himself as belonging to the Shams al-Shamal brigade, which is allied with the SDF.

He said fighting continued north on Mansour Street. Local media said coalition airstrikes were ongoing on August 22 at that location.

On August 21, the Islamic State and prominent anti-Islamic State activists said coalition airstrikes killed dozens of civilians in Raqqa. Credit: YouTube/Furat FM via Storyful
