Shares of Moderna (NASDAQ: MRNA) jumped 12.2% on Monday after the biotechnology company said its COVID-19 vaccine provides protection against new coronavirus strains first identified in the U.K. and South Africa. Scientists have discovered several new variants of the novel coronavirus that are more contagious -- and potentially more dangerous -- than previous versions. Doctors, in turn, have questioned whether Moderna's vaccine would be effective against the new strains.
A U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge on Monday approved The Weinstein Co’s liquidation plan, which sets aside $17 million for women who accused co-founder Harvey Weinstein of sexual misconduct. Judge Mary Walrath in Wilmington, Delaware announced her ruling at the conclusion of a remote hearing. She noted that 83% of sexual misconduct claimants in the bankruptcy “have expressed very loudly that they want closure through acceptance of this plan, that they do not seek to have to go through any further litigation in order to receive some recovery, some possible recompense ... although it’s clear that money will never give them that.”

Thousands of people were expected to defy public health concerns and protest against the mistreatment of Australia's Indigenous people as the country marked its national day on Tuesday on the anniversary of the arrival of the British First Fleet in 1788. For many Indigenous Australians, who trace their lineage on the continent back 50,000 years, the Australia Day holiday is known as Invasion Day symbolising the destruction of their cultures by European settlers. In Sydney, Indigenous groups have called for protests to demand the national day be changed, although state health officials have refused to make an exemption to social distancing rules to allow for crowds of more than 500 people.
President Joe Biden said Monday the U.S. government would replace the entire federal fleet of cars, trucks and SUVs with electric vehicles manufactured in the United States, a commitment tied to a broader campaign promise to create 1 million new jobs in the American auto industry and supply chains. Biden made the comments prior to signing the Made in America executive order, which places stricter rules on the federal government's procurement practices. It also updates the process for how the government decides if a product was sufficiently made in America.

Ireland is set to extend a shutdown of the economy until March 5 and will ease restrictions very gradually similar to its exit from an initial lockdown last year if it can suppress COVID-19 again, Deputy Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said on Monday. COVID-19 cases have begun to fall sharply in Ireland after exploding at the fastest rate in Europe at the turn of the year, fuelled by a four-week relaxation of restrictions and increasing prevalence of a new, more transmissible variant first detected in England. But with 766 COVID-19 infections per 100,000 people still recorded in the past 14 days, Varadkar and senior ministers will advise the Cabinet on Tuesday to keep most shops, building sites and all hospitality closed until March 5.
The U.S. House of Representatives on Monday formally charged Donald Trump with inciting insurrection - signaling the start of Trump’s second impeachment trial. House Democrats, who will serve as prosecutors, proceeded through the Capitol - still bearing the wounds from a deadly attack by Trump supporters - bringing the article of impeachment to the Senate. Senate leaders have agreed not to start the trial until February 9, which gives Trump more time to prepare a defense and allows the Senate to focus on President Joe Biden’s early priorities, like Cabinet appointments. BIDEN: "The more time we have to get up and running to meet these crises, the better." A two-thirds Senate majority will be needed to convict Trump, meaning Democrats will need the support of 17 Republicans in order to do so. Some Republicans, including Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, have publicly condemned the violent assault on the Capitol and have criticized Trump for inciting it. MCCONNELL: "The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president..." Republican Senator Mitt Romney had strong words for Trump on CNN, Sunday, saying "I believe that what is being alleged and what we saw, which is incitement to insurrection, is an impeachable offense. If not, what is?” But other Republicans, like Lindsey Graham and Marco Rubio, criticized the House impeachment as being rushed, saying it would be unconstitutional to put Trump on trial now that he is out of office, and that the focus should be on the rioters themselves. No other president in U.S. history has faced trial after leaving office, nor has a president ever faced impeachment twice.

The report published on Tuesday said the figure includes amounts missed in 2019-20 when the top 20 highest-earning clubs in Europe earned 8.2 billion euros of combined revenue, which was down 12% on the previous season. That drop in income of 1.1 billion euros was primarily down to the deferral of broadcast revenue into the financial year ending in 2021, with all the major leagues brought to a standstill in March last year due to the pandemic. "Matchday operations are a cornerstone of a club's business model and help drive other revenue-generating activity," Dan Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, said.
Cole Beasley was so committed to being part of what became the Buffalo Bills’ deepest postseason run in 27 years, the veteran slot receiver spent the past three weeks playing on a broken leg. The pain of a 38-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship game might linger far longer. “I’d expect everybody to take that feeling in the offseason and do what they feel they need to get us to where we want to go,” Beasley said Monday, a day following the loss.
He was eliminated following Saturday’s show.
