(Bloomberg) -- Glencore Plc has agreed to sell its stake in Mopani Copper Mines Plc to the Zambian government for $1.5 billion, but will get just $1 upfront.Glencore has been in talks with the state about Mopani since last year after the two clashed on the future of the mine, which has been unprofitable for years. Despite the challenges, the operations are a vital employer for Zambia.Glencore said Tuesday it will receive $1 for its share of the 90% holding it owns with Vancouver-based First Quantum Minerals Ltd. There has been speculation on how Zambia would pay for the asset after it became the first African country to default on its debt since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Zambia’s state-owned ZCCM Investments Holdings Plc already owned 10% of Mopani.Once the deal is complete, Mopani will owe its previous owners $1.5 billion. That will be repaid from sales and profits going forward. Glencore, the world’s biggest commodity trader, will retain offtake rights for Mopani’s copper production until the debt has been paid.Mopani was once central to Glencore’s plans to turn around its African copper business that’s been dogged by problems in recent years. The company spent billions of dollars to sink new shafts, but the asset has struggled to turn a profit. Still, once fully operational, the mines should produce about 140,000 tons of copper a year, compared with just 51,000 tons in 2019.“The move exits Glencore from a loss-making asset, reduces future capex exposure and simplifies its copper business,” said Alexander Pearce, an analyst at BMO Capital Markets.Safeguarding JobsGlencore shelved its plans to place the operations under care and maintenance last year after Zambia threatened to revoke its mining license in April. The government’s strategy is driven by a need to safeguard jobs at the site.Mines Minister Richard Musukwa said Tuesday that the plans to shutter the mine would have led to 15,000 workers being laid off and sent home. President Edgar Lungu will be hoping that by stepping in to take ownership, he’ll win support from labor unions and workers ahead of elections later this year.Zambia went into arrears in November, after failing to convince bondholders to freeze debt-service payments. Taking on Mopani’s debt to keep the operations running in the key Copperbelt Province could further harm the government’s chances of getting a loan from the International Monetary Fund.Musukwa said the loans will be paid off in 10 to 17 years, depending on the copper price.Still, the country will look for partners to help shoulder the debt burden.Musukwa said the government has received interest from companies based in Canada, Turkey, Qatar, China and South Africa. Mopani will require about $300 million of investment to complete projects that Glencore had started, he said.(Updates with analyst in sixth paragraph and Zambian government comment in eighth)For more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.comSubscribe now to stay ahead with the most trusted business news source.©2021 Bloomberg L.P.

Downing Street has denied that Boris Johnson takes “power naps” during the working day. The report sparked speculation over whether Mr Johnson was suffering from broken sleep at night since the birth of his youngest child Wilfred last April. It quoted an unnamed “Downing Street insider who knows the prime minister well” as saying: ”It would not be entirely uncommon in the diary for him to shut the door and have a kip for half an hour or so -Â a power executive business nap to get him ready for the rest of the day.”
(Bloomberg) -- Bitcoin’s recent wobbles have turned the cryptocurrency spotlight onto other digital coins including Ether, whose gain this year has outstripped the performance of its bigger rival. The world’s largest cryptocurrency hovered around $37,000 on Tuesday after major gyrations earlier in January. The comparative calm of late may encourage crypto enthusiasts to chase the momentum in coins like Ether, which is up almost 90% in 2021 compared with Bitcoin’s 27% advance.“Bitcoin has been in a range for the past few weeks, which gives time for capital to rotate” into other digital assets, said Vijay Ayyar, head of business development with crypto exchange Luno in Singapore.Questions abound about the drivers of the parabolic surge in Bitcoin to almost $42,000 on Jan. 8 before a sharp pullback. A study by Bloomberg Economics suggests animal spirits account for the bulk of the move, while Bitcoin’s claimed role as a hedge against risks such as inflation is secondary.A backdrop of stimulus to counter the impact of the pandemic remains a positive one for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, according to Seamus Donoghue, vice president for sales and business development at digital infrastructure provider Metaco. At the same time, JPMorgan Chase & Co. strategists have said $40,000 is a key level for Bitcoin, flagging the risk of a further drop unless it climbs back above that price soon. Bitcoin has declined 8% from the Jan. 8 record, raising the prospect of an exodus of speculative investors. The Ethereum blockchain is popular for so-called decentralized finance and is also making progress toward a network upgrade. Commentators argue these trends have aided Ether.Ether climbed 13.4% to about $1,400 as of 8:14 a.m. in New York.
