The European Commission is this week expected to disclose the tariffs it plans to impose on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) due to what it says are excessive subsidies, a move likely to prompt stern words and possible retaliation from Beijing. Less than a month after Washington quadrupled duties for Chinese EVs to 100%, Brussels will set almost certainly far lower tariffs for imports from Chinese makers such as BYD and Geely as well as western producers such as Tesla that export cars from China to Europe. The move comes as European automakers are being challenged by an influx of lower-cost EVs from Chinese rivals.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) -Germany's antitrust body on Monday gave the go-ahead to plans by three carmakers and Thyssenkrupp to jointly purchase wireless technology licences under certain conditions. The German Cartel Office said in a statement that BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Thyssenkrupp and VW have been cleared to form an alliance known as the "Automotive Licensing Negotiation Group". The watchdog said the automotive industry will need to purchase licences on thousands of patents to boost 4G or 5G wireless data transmission in cars.
