Whenever a high-profile (and high dollar value) lawsuit is filed, the first thing the side being sued does is try and get the case dismissed. That’s exactly what Disney did after Gina Carano sued the studio following her firing from "The Mandalorian." Disney hoped to get the lawsuit tossed on a First Amendment basis, but the judge has dismissed that claim, and the suit will move forward, at least for now. Disney argued in front of U.S. District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett that the studio had the right to sever its relationship with Carano because she did not espouse viewpoints that the company agreed with. According to THR, the judge stated that the First Amendment could not be used as a shield to potentially violate discrimination laws. Carano is arguing that in firing her she was discriminated against and that the studio violated California labor laws in terminating her.

A key figure behind the flawed IT system that led to hundreds of sub-postmasters being wrongly jailed has told the Post Office inquiry he had "not remembered" legal advice he was given about his obligations as an expert witness. Former senior Fujitsu engineer Gareth Jenkins was crucial in the prosecutions process because he was one of the architects of the Horizon accounting systems and one of a few people to have extensive knowledge of their workings. The letter, which related to the Post Office prosecution of postmaster Lee Castleton, was written four years before Mr Jenkins was presented as an expert witness in the case of Seema Misra, who was wrongfully sentenced to 15 months in prison while pregnant in 2010.

A federal judge said she's not likely to approve the $30 billion settlement between the payment processing giants Visa and Mastercard and the merchants who say they've overpaid on swipe fees. Visa and Mastercard reached a settlement with a group of small businesses and merchants back in March. The deal would lower and cap the fees charged by Visa and Mastercard and allow small businesses to collectively bargain for rates with the payment processors in a similar way that the large merchants do on their own now.

Amazon hit with fresh class action-style suit in UK -- $3.4BN in competition damages sought for 200,000+ sellers
Amazon is facing another competition lawsuit in the UK. The latest claim, which was filed Thursday, is seeking more than £2.7BN in damages — or around $3.4BN at current exchange rates — before the UK's Competition Appeals Tribunal. The case is being brought by Andreas Stephan, a professor of competition law at the University of East Anglia and head of its Law School, on behalf of more than 200,000 UK third-party sellers on Amazon.

Poland's biggest energy company Orlen warned gas companies in Hungary, Slovakia and Austria that it could seize their payments for imports from Russia's Gazprom , sources familiar with the matter said. The warnings, in letters sent over a month ago, are linked to claims for losses Poland incurred after being cut off from Russian supplies in 2022, two sources with knowledge of the letters told Reuters. Poland was cut off for not paying in roubles as Western nations imposed sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

Germany's natural gas caverns, at just over 79% capacity, are not far off legally-required filling levels for the coming 2024/25 winter, an industry executive said. "The underground inventories are currently well filled," said Torsten Frank, the head of Trading Hub Europe (THE), which coordinates a quarter of storage capacity under a government remit, sending calming price signals to wholesale markets. Germany's storage facilities, with a capacity of 23 billion cubic metres (bcm), were 79.04% full on Monday, industry data showed.
