PostNL shares soar as Q1 volumes and profit fall less than forecast

(Reuters) -Dutch postal firm PostNL on Monday affirmed its 2023 outlook after reporting a smaller than expected drop in first-quarter parcel volumes and operating profit helped by measures to cut delivery costs, sending its shares up nearly 10%. Parcel volumes at delivery and postal firms such as PostNL, FedEx and DHL-owner Deutsche Post are declining as e-commerce trends normalise and inflation-hit consumers cut back on discretionary spending. PostNL's finance chief Pim Berendsen said the results were mainly driven by measures taken last year to lower the cost per parcel by creating more efficient routes.

PostNL forecasts profit well below market expectations, to cut jobs

(Reuters) -Dutch postal firm PostNL on Monday forecast a 2023 operating profit significantly below market expectations and said it would cut between 200 and 300 jobs this year to reduce costs. PostNL said price adjustments would not be enough to fully offset cost increases of around 185 million euros in 2023, mostly driven by transportation and energy and a new collective labour agreement agreed with trade unions in January. PostNL forecast normalised operating profit of between 70 million and 100 million euros in 2023, compared with 84 million euros last year.

PostNL flags consumer spending drop after quarterly loss

"It has clearly impacted consumer spending," Herna Verhagen said in a statement. Consumer sentiment in the Netherlands dropped to a historic low in September while inflation shot to a record high, driven by a 200% jump in energy prices. PostNL reported a third-quarter operating loss of 20 million euros ($19.89 million), swinging from a profit of 20 million euros in the same period last year.

PostNL shares fall after profit warning on low volumes in Q3

(Reuters) -Dutch postal company PostNL warned on Friday that it expected a weaker third quarter and would not achieve its full-year outlook, sending shares diving 10% in morning trade. The Amsterdam-listed group had cut its forecast in August for a second time, guiding for full-year normalised EBIT of between 145 million and 175 million euros ($142 million to $171 million). "It is no longer realistic to assume that the current FY 2022 outlook for normalised EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) and free cash flow will materialise," it said in a statement.

PostNL cuts profit forecast, plans price increases to cope with higher costs

(Reuters) -Dutch postal company PostNL on Monday cut its 2022 earnings outlook for the second time this year and said it would raise prices in 2023 to combat soaring costs and waning e-commerce volumes. Postal operators, who benefited from a surge in online shopping during coronavirus lockdowns, now face higher labour and fuel costs and falling parcel volumes as consumers cut spending to cope with inflation. Verhagen said the company would combat the higher costs through price increases, as well as improved efficiency and productivity.
